ESL (English as a Second Language)
English as a Second Language is a support program to help students learn the language and skills needed to be successful in our school system. When students arrive in Ottawa, they will be assessed and given an ESL stage
and recommended ESL support. An ESL teacher and classroom teacher will collaborate on the best possible support for each student at school. Please note that ESL support varies from school to school.
Accomodations for Elementary students
International students in Kindergarten to grade 7 must live with parent(s) or relatives who act as custodians while studying in the program. Students in grade 8 (13 years old) may live with a Canadian family arranged by the homestay program.
The Full-day Kindergarten Program for 4 and 5 year olds will be offered in 55 schools in September 2012 and should be fully phased in to all schools by 2015–2016. Read more in our brochure
